HOW TO BE FLUENT IN A LANGUAGE?
Hello everyone, I am teacher Micah from CNN International Language School. Today, I would like to share some tips to achieving fluency in a language.
Fluency in a foreign language is a major accomplishment. It is also a great way to increase your opportunities for employment and travel. So we need to work on each aspect of language fluency like speaking, listening, reading, writing and cultural literacy.
Let me give you some advices on how to be fluent in language.
First, listen to native speakers in natural context as much as possible. You can make friends with someone whose mother language is the language you are studying. If it is not possible, you can watch movies to hear the proper intonation, pronunciation and accent. Movies are great studying material especially if you want to be fluent in a language.
Second, practice speaking every day. Try to learn new words and phrases and use them when you talk to someone. Speak as native speakers usually do, using idioms and linguistic shortcuts instead of imitating a textbook which is often excessively formal and repetitive. Also, learn how to master the language in both informal and formal registers, to be able to develop a wider approach to different people and situations.
Third, write something in the language you are studying every day. Writing is very important in studying a foreign language. You can see your own mistakes; you can find grammar errors and so on. It is also important, because sometimes, written version is radically different from the spoken version.
Last, learn and maintain a good knowledge of the culture. Make sure that you know the full cultural meaning of the slang phrases and expressions before attempting to use them. It will avoid misunderstanding and miscommunication in a conversation.
Aiming for fluency is not easy. Make efforts to continue learning the language on a daily basis non-stop for best results.
Thank you for listening. Till next time.
